Forest School

Key Skills to be a Historian:

  • Tell a story about different historical periods
  • Use historical vocabulary

We learnt about air raids during World War 2, and the different ways people could keep themselves safe: blackouts, Morrison shelters and Anderson shelters. We listened to the ‘Air Raid’ siren and the ‘All Clear’ siren and imagined how it would have felt to be alive during World War 2. Then we went down to the forest and were set the challenge of building an Anderson shelter that would protect us from an air raid. We had 30 minutes to use our forest schools skills to create a strong shelter before the air raid began. As soon as we heard the siren, we had to rush to our shelters. Mrs Fowler and Miss Hartley threw basketball ‘bombs’ at our shelters to test their strength. Most of our shelters survived! But some crumbled!

Remembrance Day

UHa and the whole of Upper School made a silhouette of a soldier and wrote a thank you message. By making our own memorial we paid tribute to the soldiers who gave up their today for our tomorrow.

As a class we took part in the two minutes silence and learnt about the unnamed soldier who lies at Westminster Abbey, we also learnt about the poem 'In Flanders Fields' by John McCrae. In addition to this, we also learnt about Clacton in WW1 and WW2. Did you know about Middlesex Military Hospital in WW1? Did you know that Clacton sadly had the first civilian casualties on the British mainland in WW2?
