Firstly we would like to say how amazing your children are. We are so proud of how resilient they have been during these uncertain times and how well they have settled back into school. Well done to each and every one of you! We are really looking forward to teaching you this year and cannot wait to have lots of fun along the way.

We're waddling in the South Pole with the 'Penguins' this term.
Wrap up warm!

Welcome to our Autumn Curriculum!

During our lessons we are using the topic of Penguins and the South Pole as inspiration!

In our topic work, we are learning how to write in a range of genres about penguins.

As responsible members of our world, we are exploring how we can look after the conservation of penguins and other Antarctic wildlife.

We had a special delivery from the South Pole, unfortunately the cheeky delivery escaped! Here is some CCTV footage of his adventures around the school.

Have a little look at our classroom...

Spring Term

In the Spring term, LHW has been transformed into Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. We have all been put into house teams: Fletchendor, Parflebird, Baileysclaw and Hawkinsward. Our science lessons have been changed to herbology lessons, our PE to Quidditch and we will be learning lots about Harry Potter with links to our curriculum throughout the term.

Literacy

In Literacy we have been looking at writing our own version of traditional tales. Can you guess which tradidtional tale we were retelling using our own Harry Potter characters?
We created a story map and acted out the story.

Science

We have been learning about the parts of plants and trees and their functions.
First we classified a range of leaves and identified if they came from evergreen or deciduous trees. Then we carried out scientific experiments to investigate what beans need to grown. Finally we identified what part of a plant we can eat.

PE
We have been having fun learning hockey skills.

DT

In Design Technology, we evaluated existing products. We then designed, created and evaluated our very own wizard hats.

This term we will be entering the fascinating world of Mini Beasts! Our Project based learning means that our lessons all link. Over the Summer Term we will cover 3 projects: Mini Beast Stories, Jobs for Mini Beasts and Mini Beast Hotels. In Science we will explore how to look after animals through the wonderful world of creatures and their habitats. We will discuss how to look after our local environment where these creatures can be found. Through ICT we will be learning how to use the internet safely and using ICT as a research tool as well as programming mini beast beebots. In Geography we will learn about the changing seasons whilst looking at the local landscape and the environments Mini Beasts would choose to live in. In History we will be looking at the importance of bee hives over the years. In Art, all of the pupils will be contributing to their own versions of Eric Carle art work with Mini Beasts as a theme. In Design and Technology we will design, make and evaluate our own Mini Beast enclosures. In Religious Education and PSHE we will be exploring the responsibilities we have in looking after our local environment and special places. By exploring how insects make their own ‘music’ we will look at different instruments.

Literacy
In Literacy we will improve our information writing by studying the features of these texts whilst researching the world of mini beasts. We will look at the writing styles of Julia Donaldson and Eric Carle and how they use mini beasts to tell stories. During this term we will use the mini beast theme to study and adapt our own stories.
Maths
In Maths we will cover Number, Measurement, Ratio and Proportion, Algebra, Geometry and Statistics, the children will have personalised activities that focus on their individual needs and targets. They will also develop their ability to use the skills they have learnt and apply them to problem solving and reasoning activities. The Maths ladders in this Home-School Book show the progression of Maths knowledge and skills.

We will carry on with the  four types of homework that will be set throughout the term: Learning Log, Literacy, Maths, and Spellings and Times Tables Practise. Learning Log, Literacy and Maths homework must be completed in this book. Some recording is necessary for Spellings and Times Tables Practice. Your child will receive three ‘insect eggs’ for their team if they read more than four times a week, and complete their weekly homework, so don’t forget to sign their Reading Record!

Our amazing display!

Our Minibeast Science
In science the children have enjoyed learning about the 7 life proccesses and  sorting objects into living, never living and dead.
We had fun searching for minibeasts in our outdoor areas and discovering the names of minibeast body parts.

RE
The children enjoyed acting out the life of Buddha and creating their own lanterns to remember the festival of Wesek.

Computing - Beebots
We predicted the behaviour of simple programmes and began to write instructions .

Music
In music we have been exploring how music is created and we had fun playing tuned and untuned instruments.
