Weekly Spellings
The children are given weekly spellings. These are written in their yellow spelling book which they can take home and practise or they can leave at school. The children will be tested on these spellings the following week.
Times Tables
Children must practise the times table they are learning as much as they can at home. They will be tested every Tuesday on their times table. If they get all of them correct 3 times they will be tested verbally and then will move up the times table ladder. The children are encouraged to learn their times tables in regular order, out of sequence and the division inverse.

ESCAPE FROM POMPEII
Including Extreme Earth & The Romans
Upper School Spring Term Project 2021
This term, children will be learning about the infamous eruption of Mount Vesuvius and its effects on the Roman town of Pompeii. This project combines learning of History and Geography. We will learn about the Founding of Rome, life during this period and Boudicca’s Rebellion. We will develop our map reading skills and World Geography knowledge as we trace the growth of the Roman Empire. We will also develop our understanding of British, human and physical geography by learning about Roman roads and their importance for transport, trade and defence. Further geographical learning will come from our studies of different natural disasters, how and where they occur, including volcanoes, earthquakes, tsunamis, droughts and hurricanes.
Children will develop their Science skills by learning about forces such as gravity, air resistance, water resistance and friction, all of which play important and dangerous parts in natural disasters on our planet. They will also be learning about properties of materials by imagining that they are Romans who need weapons, shields, armour and building materials. We will explore magnetism, malleability, flexibility, conductivity and transparency.
When natural disasters occur, aid from around the world is urgent and we will learn about the work of the British Red Cross charity. As one of the Queen’s charities, the British Red Cross benefited from the fundraising of the song ‘Sing’ by Gary Barlow and the Commonwealth Band. During Music lessons, children will learn to play this song on the keyboard by reading musical notation on the bass and treble clef.
In Art, children will explore and recreate Hokusai’s ‘The Great Wave off Kanagawa’ using a variety of different artistic techniques such as line drawing, shading, collage and layering. They will experiment with different materials (poster paint, pastels, crayon, pencil) to create a range of effects and use these in a completed piece of work. In learning about a great artist and his work, we will be exploring how to draw familiar objects with correct proportions and with three dimensions.
During Literacy, pupils will continue to develop their key writing skills through various genres, including newspapers, information texts and narratives, all based around the theme of Pompeii.

WAR & CONFLICT
Upper School Autumn Term Project 2020
During each project, the majority of lessons are purposefully linked to the projects in order to encourage children to make connections between aspects of their learning. Project Pages will be stuck into our homework books at the start of each project so that you can see what we will be learning about in each subject and how they link together.
Some lessons do not easily fit within a theme and so will be taught discretely. This term, our discrete subjects are PE and French. In PE, children will learn a range of throwing, jumping and running events, thereby improving their agility, control and ability to reflect and improve on their performance. They will also practise and apply their throwing, catching and tactical skills to competitive games of rounders.
In French, children will be learning to speak, listen, read and write an increasing number of sentence structures in French, as well as broadening their French vocabulary and understanding of French grammar. The context of the lessons will be talking about themselves, their appearance and their family, as well as fashion, actions and feelings.
World War Teams
This term children will work in World War-themed teams to earn ‘war medals’ for their allied country: France, Britain, Russia, America and China. They can earn ‘war medals’ by demonstrating our core values, following the Golden Rules and being the best learner they can be. Your child will also receive three ‘war medals’ if they read more than four times a week, and complete their weekly homework, so don’t forget to sign their Reading Record! At the end of the term, the team with the most ‘war medals’ will receive a special treat!
Parent Pupil Project
If you would like a project to work on with your child at home, your task is to make a World War 2 model plane! Parent-Pupil projects are optional and there is no set deadline for their completion. However, the earlier in the term they are made, the longer we have to enjoy them in the classroom!
