Year 6 2016

Picture
These children have been carefully selected by Mrs Bardetti, Miss Cole, Year 6 Teachers and Support Staff because they have shown, through their school life at Holland Haven so far, that they can be excellent role models. Their job is to promote and model the Core Values and Golden Rules by consistently following them. They are always on hand to help solve any problems in the playground and to give advice. They also have extra responsibilities, such as meetings with Miss Cole, running the Toy Shed at lunchtimes, supporting reception pupils and reading the Golden certificates in assembly. Our Prefects this year have also decided to allocate different roles to each member of the Prefect Team. This is an excellent idea which will help them work brilliantly as a strong and effective team.

Curriculum Map

Summer Term 2016

Around the World in 34 Days

Picture
Our first Spring Term project is called ‘Around the World in 34 Days’. Planet Earth is a very big place, yet we are going to learn a little about all seven continents during the 34 school days that make up the first half of the Summer term. We will be developing our key skills and knowledge in various subjects through the context of our planet and its human and physical features.

In Geography, We are going to be exploring maps of the world, including the continents, the Tropics of Capricorn and Cancer, the Equator and how this affects climate, and the physical features of the different continents. While exploring the planet, we will be developing our geographical skills, such as reading maps and using compass points and grid references.

In Science, we will be learning about the life cycles of different living things, including plants, mammals, amphibians, birds and insects from around the world.

During our Literacy lessons, we will revise the features of non-chronological reports. We will practise writing using an impersonal and formal tone so that we can write our own information texts about the different continents. We will also apply our narrative writing knowledge by composing stories set in different parts of the world.

Using what we have learnt about electrical circuits in the Spring term, we will be creating electrical quiz boards in DT lessons to test people’s geographical knowledge of the world, the continents and the countries. By designing circuits and incorporating them into the quiz board, bulbs will light up to show that the user has answered correctly.

Having studied the world map in geography, we will then learn about computer networks in our Computing lessons and explore how networks allow information to be sent great distances - from one side of the world to the other - at very fast speeds! We will learn what networks are and explore some of their uses, including those which we take for granted every day!

To develop our music skills, we will be listening to traditional music from all around the world which will help us appreciate the different cultures and traditions of different continents and countries.

As well as our basketball training with the ‘Cannons’ coaches, we will also be developing our strength, control, stability and stamina in P.E. through a range of athletics activities, including throwing, jumping and running! Once we have been trained in these different disciplines, we will take part in our own Olympic games!

The religions of Buddhism, Sikhism and Islam will be explored in detail during ‘religion days’ this term. We will draw comparisons between these three religions and other religions that we have already learnt about. We will also find out which religions are most common in different areas of the world.

Welcome to Africa!

Picture
Our second Summer Term project is called ‘Welcome to Africa’. Having learnt about the world last half term, we are now going to focus on the continent of Africa. We will be developing our key skills and knowledge in various subjects through an African context.

In Geography, we will explore Africa’s countries, human and physical geography and draw comparisons between Africa and the United Kingdom. When we visit Fingringhoe Nature Reserve,we will also be using compasses and maps when orienteering which will help us to develop our map reading skills.

During our Literacy lessons, we will be writing our own narratives based on the story of ‘The Lion King’. We will need to use all of our continuous skills, such as punctuation, spelling, handwriting, connectives and descriptive language.

To develop our music skills, we will be learning about the historical and cultural importance of the Djembe drum in Africa. We will also be learning some traditional African drumming patterns which we will combine into our own musical compositions! We will record our compositions using musical notation.

As well as our basketball training with the ‘Cannons’ coaches, we will also be learning and performing African dances in P.E. which we can perform alongside the African music that we have composed. When we visit Fingringhoe Nature Reserve, we will also be developing our orienteering and teamwork skills.

Finally, we will be exploring different kinds of African art by researching, designing and creating Tingatinga paintings and African masks! We will learn about the cultural significance of these types of art, such as the importance of symmetry.

Star Behaviour Reward - Spring Term

To celebrate the behaviour of children in Upper School, all children who lost 4 or less minutes of their Golden Time during the Spring Term participated in a morning of outdoor activities on Thursday 14th April. These children have shown that they can follow Holland Haven's Golden Rules and be responsible learners and friends. The activities included a variety of sports on the field and playground, den-building, art, role play and other pupil-led games on Hadley Hills and toasting marshmallows on the campfire, bug-hunting and more den-building in Hadley Woods! Here are some photos of our morning.

University Challenge 2016

Graduation Photos will be added here once we receive them from the University of Essex.

Spring Term 2016

Picture
Our first Spring Term project is called ‘Out of this World’.

We will be developing our key skills and knowledge in various subjects through the context of Space. We will learn about important features of planet Earth, including the Equator, the Tropics of Capricorn and Cancer and the different climate zones. We will discover how the movements of the Earth cause day and night, seasons and years, as well as learning about the different moon phases and how they occur.

In Science, we will be learning about how to keep our bodies and our hearts healthy. We will explore why healthy eating, exercise and oxygen are important for our hearts, and why drugs can be either beneficial or harmful. We will be investigating how Tim Peake gets his nutrients exercise and oxygen while on the International Space Station.

As part of our Personal, Social and Health education, we will also explore some of our emotional needs that enable us to stay healthy and consider how Tim Peake’s emotions may be affected while he is away from his family.

During our Literacy lessons, we revise the features of journalistic writing and write our own newspaper articles about various space missions: Apollo 11, Apollo 13 and Challenger. We will also continue to develop our narrative skills by writing space-themed stories!

We will be developing our design and construction skills by designing and creating aliens, thinking carefully about colours and features! We will use pattern pieces to cut felt to the correct shape and size and then use wool and a needle to sew them together. Finally, we will fill them with hollowfibre filling so that they are cuddly!

In our Computing lessons, we will be learning to use programming software and algorithms to design, write and debug our own space-themed computer games.

To improve our musical skills, we will be listening to the Planet Suite of music by the composer, Gustav Holst and thinking about how the composition has been carefully chosen to match each planet. We will also be listening to sounds that have been recorded in space and on different planets, and use this to inspire our own space compositions.

Autumn Term 2015

Picture
Our Victorian theme consists of a series of projects which will focus on different aspects of the Victorian period, including famous Victorians, the lives of children, the Industrial Revolution and Victorian Clacton. Project Pages will be stuck into our homework books at the start of each project so that you can see what we will be learning about. Our first project is called ‘Street Child’ and our second project is called 'Famous Victorians'.
