Our Autumn Term Topic Page

We're waddling in the South Pole with the 'Penguins' this term.
Wrap up warm!
Welcome to our Autumn Curriculum!
During our lessons we are using the topic of Penguins and the South Pole as inspiration!
In our topic work, we are learning how to write in a range of genres about penguins.
As responsible members of our world, we are exploring how we can look after the conservation of penguins and other Antarctic wildlife.

Our amazing work...
We have been talking about growth mindset in PSCHE. We designed a wonderful 'Reach for the stars' display.
We read 'Paper Dolls' and created our very own friendship chain.
In science we have been learning to name, sort and classify.
We have sorted animals into the 6 main categories and into carnivores, herbivores and omnivores. We enjoyed labelling the body parts of penguins and a range of different creatures.
Spring Term
In the Spring term, 2HP will be transformed into Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry with themed teams: Fletchendor, Parflebird, Cardypuff and Hawkinclaw. Our science lessons will change to herbology lessons, our PE to Quidditch and we will be learning lots about Harry Potter with links to our curriculum throughout the term.
Welcome to the enchanted term of Wizardry! At the end of the Autumn term the children found mysterious magical invitations delivered to their lockers. Invitations to join a term at Holland Hogwarts school of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Each lesson will be a chance for the children to master their skills to help them graduate for the term at Holland Hogwarts. The children will be inspected by the Ministry of Magic and they will receive a graduation certificate by an Inspector.
Our Project based learning means that our lessons all link. Over the Spring Term we will cover 3 projects: Wizards and Witches, Hogwarts and Potions.
In Science we will be herbologist plant detectives which will help us to make potions. Through ICT we will be learning how to use the internet safely, using ICT as a research tool and how to use simple programmes to help us with our spells. Through looking at Quidditch World cup, the children will learn about the different countries and continents around the world whilst developing their P.E skills to help them learn the game of Quidditch itself and learning to dance at the Hogwarts ball. We will be learning the Harry Potter theme in our music lessons to accompany the final ball at the end of term. In History we will be looking at wizards and witches in stories over the years. We will be replicating stained glass windows as part of our Artwork to combine the lessons. In Design and Technology we will design, make and evaluate our own wizards hats, this will be combined with Forest Schools, where we will be making wands. In Religious Education and PSHE we will be exploring the responsibilities we have in looking after ourselves, special objects and symbols. To celebrate icons of our nation we will be looking at JK Rowling and her achievements.
Literacy
In Literacy we will improve our information writing by studying the features of these texts whilst researching the world of magic. We will write traditional stories and compare the roles of different witches and wizards. We will have a problem later on in the term where the children will need to write instructions to help us catch this ‘problem’! We will then move on to explore poems using magic as our theme. During this term we will use the wizards as a theme to study and adapt our own stories.
Maths
In Maths we will cover Number, Measurement, Ratio and Proportion, Algebra, Geometry and Statistics, the children will have personalised activities that focus on their individual needs and targets. They will also develop their ability to use the skills they have learnt and apply them to problem solving and reasoning activities. The Maths ladders in this Home-School Book show the progression of Maths knowledge and skills.

English
In English we will be looking at writing our own version of traditional tales. Can you guess which traditional tale we will be retelling using our own Harry Potter characters?
In Design Technology, we will be evaluating existing products. We designed, created and evaluated our very own wizard hats.
2HP have created their own Hedwigs and magical wands to help them with their learning in our wizard shool.
In art we are going to make our very own stained glass windows. We have been investigating colour and tone.
In science, 2HP have been observing , sorting and classifying types of plants and trees. The children planned an investigation to see what conditions plants need to grow. They are looking forward to finding out the results.

This term we will be entering the fascinating world of Mini Beasts! Our Project based learning means that our lessons all link. Over the Summer Term we will cover 3 projects: Mini Beast Stories, Jobs for Mini Beasts and Mini Beast Hotels. In Science we will explore how to look after animals through the wonderful world of creatures and their habitats. We will discuss how to look after our local environment where these creatures can be found. Through ICT we will be learning how to use the internet safely and using ICT as a research tool as well as programming mini beast beebots. In Geography we will learn about the changing seasons whilst looking at the local landscape and the environments Mini Beasts would choose to live in. In History we will be looking at the importance of bee hives over the years. In Art, all of the pupils will be contributing to their own versions of Eric Carle art work with Mini Beasts as a theme. In Design and Technology we will design, make and evaluate our own Mini Beast enclosures. In Religious Education and PSHE we will be exploring the responsibilities we have in looking after our local environment and special places. By exploring how insects make their own ‘music’ we will look at different instruments.

We will carry on with the four types of homework that will be set throughout the term: Learning Log, Literacy, Maths, and Spellings and Times Tables Practise. Learning Log, Literacy and Maths homework must be completed in this book. Some recording is necessary for Spellings and Times Tables Practice. Your child will receive three ‘insect eggs’ for their team if they read more than four times a week, and complete their weekly homework, so don’t forget to sign their Reading Record!
