Geography - We are going to be exploring maps of the world, including the continents, the Tropics of Capricorn and Cancer, the Equator and how this affects climate, and the physical features of the different continents. While exploring the planet, we will be developing our geographical skills, such as reading maps and using compass points and grid references. We will draw comparisons between the UK and other parts of the world by studying climate, culture, physical and human geography.
Science - We will be learning about the life cycles of different living things, including plants, mammals, amphibians, birds and insects from around the world. We will also learn about the human life cycle and how we change between birth and old age. Computing - The Earth is a very big place and this helps us to realise how amazing the Internet it. It allows you to contact people from all over the world very quickly. This means it is important that we understand how to use the Internet safely. This half term, we will learn how to keep ourselves safe online and what to do if we are worried. Literacy - During our Literacy lessons, we will revise the features of non-chronological reports. We will practise writing using an impersonal and formal tone so that we can write our own information texts about the different continents. We will also revise persuasive writing and use this to write about causes which matter to us, for example, protecting endangered species. We will continue to develop our narrative writing skills, ensuring we use all of our continuous skills, such as punctuation, spelling, handwriting, connectives and descriptive language. P.E. - In P.E. we will be developing our strength, control, stability and stamina through a range of athletics activities, including throwing, jumping and running! We will also be learning to play rounders and refining the throwing, catching and sprinting skills that we need to make a successful rounders team. |
Music - We will be listening to traditional music from all around the world to help us appreciate the different cultures and traditions of different continents and countries. We will learn about the historical and cultural importance of the Djembe drum in Africa as well as learning some traditional African drumming patterns which we will combine into our own musical compositions! We will record our compositions using musical notation.
Design and Technology - Using what we have learnt about electrical circuits in the Spring term, we will be creating electrical quiz boards to test people’s geographical knowledge of the world, the continents, the countries and their football teams! By designing circuits and incorporating them into the quiz board, bulbs will light up to show that the user has answered correctly. Art - We will be exploring different kinds of African art by researching, designing and creating Tingatinga paintings and African masks! We will learn about the cultural significance of these types of art, such as the importance of symmetry. PSHE - We will be learning about how we sometimes need to adjust to change and ways in which this can make us feel. We will explore ways of coping with change and consider changes which we have already experienced as well as changes that are approaching, such as secondary school. Our Forest Schools lessons will also help us to develop independence, friendships, trust and teamwork skills that will help us to cope with change. First Aid - Children will be taught essential First Aid skills, including dialling 999, helping conscious and unconscious casualties, the recovery position, CPR and recognising heart attacks. R.E. Children will take part in an R.E. day during which they will learn about the religions of Islam, Buddhism and Sikhism. They will learn to respect and appreciate differences whilst expressing their own beliefs and drawing comparisons. |

Our Spring Term projects are called ‘Out of this World’ and 'Artificial Intelligence'. We will be developing our key skills and knowledge in various subjects through the context of Space. We will learn about important features of planet Earth, including the Equator, the Tropics of Capricorn and Cancer and the different climate zones. We will discover how the movements of the Earth cause day and night, seasons and years, as well as learning about the different moon phases and how they occur. During our 'Artificial Intelligence' project, we will be exploring lots of philosophical questions, including whether robots have feelings and the way in which they are portrayed in the media. We will be learning about the history of robotics and how technology has changed lives over time.
During our English lessons, we will revise the features of journalistic writing and write our own newspaper articles about various space missions: Apollo 11, Apollo 13 and Challenger. We will also continue to develop our narrative skills by writing space-themed stories! Next, we will be writing Film Reviews for various robot-themed films, including ‘Robots’, ‘Wall-E’ and ‘Bibo’. We will then revisit our poetic skills by writing poems about robots using thought-provoking images as stimulus. In our Computing lessons, we will be learning to use programming software and algorithms to design, write and debug our own space-themed computer games. |
We will be developing our design and construction skills by designing and creating aliens, thinking carefully about colours and features! We will use pattern pieces to cut felt to the correct shape and size and then use wool and a needle to sew them together. Finally, we will fill them with hollowfibre filling so that they are cuddly!
In Science, we will be learning about how to keep our bodies and our hearts healthy. We will explore why healthy eating, exercise and oxygen are important for our hearts, and why drugs can be either beneficial or harmful. We will be investigating how astronauts get their nutrients, exercise and oxygen while on the International Space Station. As part of our Personal, Social and Health education, we will also explore some of our emotional needs that enable us to stay healthy and consider how astronauts’ emotions may be affected while they are away from their families. In our second Science unit, we will be investigating how robots work by creating series and parallel circuits, exploring the difference between them and experimenting with ways to make motors faster, bulbs brighter and buzzers louder! We will also learn how to represent circuits using conventional circuit symbols. To improve our musical skills, we will be listening to the Planet Suite of music by the composer, Gustav Holst and thinking about how the composition has been carefully chosen to match each planet. We will also be listening to sounds that have been recorded in space and on different planets, and use this to inspire our own space compositions. |

'Street Child' Curriculum
Through the ‘Street Child’ story by Berlie Doherty, children are introduced to a range of key aspects of Victorian life: workhouses, poverty, education and diseases. Through our Street Child project, we can explore each of these aspects, developing knowledge and skills in each subject.

Children will begin by exploring who Queen Victoria was, where the Victorian era fits within history and then delve into the lives of Jim Jarvis and other children during her reign. They will develop their historical enquiry skills through questioning and analysing primary and secondary sources and evaluating these sources.
Physical EducationCircuses were popular during the Victorian period and Jim gets to spend some time watching the performers before getting chased away again! In P.E. children will develop various skills, such as juggling, balance and gymnastic routines in order to create a final performance, fit for a Victorian circus! We will also be learning a dance routine from the ‘Oliver!’ musical with Mrs Clemenson (a trained dance teacher).
MusicThe Victorians helped to shape Christmas as we know it, including Christmas Caroling. In preparation for our annual Christmas Carol Service at St Bart’s Church, the children will be refining their abilities to sing musically. They will also learn to read musical notation and play ‘Silent Night’, a traditional Victorian Carol, on the keyboard.
Religious EducationIn R.E., children will explore the Creation Story, discuss the beliefs held by Christians and the effects that these beliefs have on their lives.. Children will also explore how Darwin’s theory of evolution by natural selection challenged the Bible’s Creation Story.
ComputingDuring Computing lessons, children will use search technologies efficiently in order to research various aspects of Victorian life, collect this research and then use their digital literacy skills to present it, carefully following copyright rules.

When Jim is London, the air is thick with soot and smoke: a result of the Industrial Revolution. Children will learn how this inspired the Victorian artist, William Morris. They will develop their ability to analyse, evaluate and take inspiration from Victorian art styles and artists. They will continue to refine their control and proficiency with pencil, paint and scissors in order to create their own William Morris style wallpaper design and a silhouette portrait of themselves.
ScienceDisease is rife throughout Jim’s story. How could the Victorians purify their drinking water to keep themselves healthy? Children will spend time exploring how evaporation, condensation, distillation, filtration and sieving can turn dirty water into pure, safe drinking water. We will also be learning about Charles Darwin and his theory of evolution and natural selection to discover how living things can adapt and evolve over time.
Design and TechnologyWe will learn about Isambard Kingdom Brunel and George Stephenson and their world-wide impact during Design and Technology lessons. As a class, we will research the appearance and design of Victorian trains and decide on a design for our own class train. Small groups will then create a carriage each using carpentry skills, nets of cuboids and decorative art skills before joining them together to make our class train.
EnglishThrough careful analysis of genre features, children will continue to develop their ongoing narrative skills by writing a story about Jim’s escape from the workhouse.. Children will learn to write a balanced argument: Should Jim return to the workhouse or stay on the run? We will explore biographies of several famous Victorians, including Thomas Edison, Charles Darwin and Charles Dickens. We will also learn about Alfred Lord Tennyson’s poem, ‘The Charge of the Light Brigade’ which recounts the Crimean War.
