Spring Term - Pirates
During the Spring term, the children in Middle School will be learning all about Pirates. In English, they will be writing an information text about Captain Blackbeard. Later in the term, we will be using The Whale as inspiration for an exciting adventure story and also, creating some Pirate poems.
In theme lessons, they will be finding out where in the world Pirates were usually found. Also, they will find and use evidence to discover exactly what life was like for a Pirate when they were at their height (the Golden Age) - including what they wore, what they ate and how they fought their enemies.
During outdoor learning sessions, they will create a treasure map with instructions that lead to hidden treasure. Through art, the children will use sketching techniques to design and produce their own Jolly Roger flags. This links to our Design and Technology sessions, where we will create moving pictures using levers. The children will be developing their presenting skills using Google slides and Google Docs. Following on from that, we will use Purple Mash to create an animation.
In our science lessons, we will be learning about States of Matter and Forces. We will discover the difference between solids, liquids and gasses and about the effects that forces had on pirate ships. Children will get the opportunity to bake hardtack biscuits to find out what a pirate’s diet was like!
Towards the end of the term, we will have a special Pirate day. The children will get to spend the whole day dressed as a Pirate and will take part in a series of Pirate activities. We will also be visiting the beach when the weather is warmer, to dig for buried treasure and to build a Pirate ship out of sand and shells.
