Our termly themes incorporate and link the school curriculum and will provide the children with access to lots of exciting and interesting lessons which I hope class 4C will enjoy.

Our Theme this term is ... 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory'

This term, our theme will be ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ by Roald Dahl. In our English lessons, we will be writing our own versions of the story, as well as writing a range of non-fiction texts based on chocolate. In Geography, we will be learning about where in the world cocoa is grown and the journey it takes to become chocolate. For Science, our lessons will focus on the digestive system and teeth. We will look at how our bodies digest chocolate and the impact sugary foods have on our teeth. In Art, we will study Quentin Blake, Roald Dahl’s famous illustrator. We will examine some of his fantastic illustrations and then attempt to recreate some examples of his artwork. In our Philosophy lessons, we will look at the dilemmas that the children in the story faced as we learn about rules and responsibilities. As well as reading the book, we will watch scenes from the film and in Music we will create a soundtrack to accompany a scene from the film.

Homework

Homework is usually sent out on Tuesday afternoon and should be returned to school on the following Monday. Please have a quick look at it on the day that it is sent home, even if you don't intend to do it then - that way, if you have any problems, you have got time to ask about it and get any help that you need.
There are four types of task: English, Maths, Times Tables/Spelling practise or a 'Learning Log' style task. Also don't forget to read and get your record signed! Reading should be done four times a week at home. See our school page for examples of Star Homework
Our Parent Pupil Project this term was to create your own Willy Wonka inspired chocolate themed sweet treat. These will then be displayed around the classroom for a short time before being eaten and enjoyed!
PE Days
Our PE days this year are Tuesday and Friday.
Please ensure children are sent to school wearing the correct PE uniform inline with the school's PE uniform policy.

Our theme for the Spring term is 'Pirates'

During the Spring term, the children in Middle School will be learning all about Pirates. In English, they will be learning to write a Pirate adventure. They will be shown how to create suspense and tension, use cliffhangers and flashbacks to write their own pirate themed adventure. Later in the term, they will create an information text about a creature that lives under the sea. Finally, they will use their knowledge of what life was like on board a ship to write a Pirate’s diary.

In theme lessons, they will be finding out where Pirates were usually found and where they were in the world. They will learn the names of different seas and oceans. Also, they will find and use evidence to discover exactly what life was like for a Pirate, when they were at their height (the Golden Age), what they wore, what they ate and how they fought their enemies. During outdoor learning sessions, they will create a treasure map with instructions that lead to hidden treasure.

Through art and design lessons, the children will use sketching techniques to design and produce their own Jolly Roger flags with moving parts and an underwater seascape. They will also produce their own Wanted poster for a famous Pirate. using Purple Mash. The children will be developing their programming skills by creating an electronic quiz about sea creatures.

In our science lessons, we will be learning about forces. We will learn about the effects that forces had on pirate ships when they were in the water.

Towards the end of the term, we will have a special Pirate day. The children will get to spend the whole day dressed as a Pirate and will take part in a series of Pirate activities. We will also be visiting the beach when the weather is warmer to dig for buried treasure and to build a Pirate ship picture or sculpture out of sand and shells.

Our theme for the Summer term is ... 'The Tudors'
This term, we will be learning about The Tudors. We will learn about Henry VIII and life during Tudor times.
In English, we will use our imaginations to write exciting adventure stories with a Tudor twist! We will also explore some of Shakespeare’s most famous plays and how we still use his language in our lives. We will become historians to find evidence and discover exactly what life was like for Shakespeare and find out why Henry VIII married so many times and how the Church of England came into being.
Science this term will be about identifying the functions of the different parts of a plant, finding out what plants need in order to grow, and exploring how plants reproduce; this will be linked to designing and making our own Tudor Knot Garden. We will also learn about the importance of a balanced diet and healthy nutrition and this will be studied in comparison to the diet of both rich and poor Tudors.
In Computing, we will continue to improve our research skills to find out information about Tudor castles and then learn how to create a presentation of the information using Google Slides.
In Art, the children will be exploring historical art and painting portraits based on the style of the famous portrait painter, Holbein.  We will also create Tudor Roses using mixed media.
In our PE lessons, we will be improving our tennis skills as well as examining the game of Short Tennis which was a popular sport in Tudor times.
This term we are going to learn to play recorders and learn to play ‘Greensleeves’, a song composed by Henry VIII.
Towards the end of term, we will be visiting Layer Marney Tower to experience a day in the life of the Tudors.
Our teams this term will be named after Shakespeare plays; Macbeth, Hamlet, Othello and Tempest.
