On Friday 6th June the sports field was host to a long standing traditional event, the Hadley Cup Football and Netball Tournament. Football and netball teams turned out from local schools in the area to take part in this energetic, enjoyable event. The sun was shining, supporters were out from Holland Haven and the visiting schools and the teams played with skill, enjoyment and true sportsmanship.
The football tournament consisted of Holland Haven Primary School, Frinton on Sea Primary School, Walton Primary School and Kirby Primary School. All teams played very well and all were keen to win the cup. Congratulations to Walton Primary School who deservedly won, with Holland Haven coming as close runners up. Our thanks go to Mr Fletcher for overseeing the refereeing and assistance in the organising of the event.
In the girls netball tournament, Mrs Young kindly headed up the refereeing with keen support and coaching points from our chair of governors, Mrs Sharman. Holland Haven played against Frinton Primary School and Walton Primary School with Walton taking the lead to win the shield and Holland Haven as runners up.
The event was a joy to take part in and watch. All the children from all of the schools were extremely well behaved, showing they are good ambassadors. I would also like special thanks to go to Mrs Blundell for organising, running, scoring and officiating the event; it ran very smoothly.
The girls who assisted Mrs Blundell and I were all stars. The teaching staff and pupils who came out to support were a key part of the afternoon. A very special mention needs to be given to Mr Senk, who unfortunately wasn't able to attend this year, but it is his enthusiasm that has kept this event running for so many years and all the schools are grateful that this is still in the annual calendar of events. Mr Senk was sorely missed.
The captains from the football and netball teams are writing a report to follow.

The Hadley Cup 2013 |
A Brief History of The Hadley Cup
The Hadley Cup is a football and netball tournament held annually at Holland Haven Primary School in memory of Mary Hadley.
This inspirational lady was a primary school teacher at Walton Primary School and, later, St. Osyth Primary School. Her expertise led her into an advisory role, where she provided training in the teaching of mathematics. Mary later became Deputy Headteacher at Holland Haven Primary School. She was very keen on sport and began coaching a girls’ netball team. In the late 1990’s, Mary retired and assumed the position of Holland Haven’s Chair of the Governing Body.
After Mary’s death, Holland Haven School and Mary’s husband – Ernie - decided to commemorate her life with a peaceful garden and a sporting tournament: Hadley Woods and the Hadley Cup.
Several other schools have participated in this competition over the years. However, since 2001, Holland Haven have competed with the football and netball teams of Hamford Primary Academy, Frinton, Walton and Kirby Primary School.

The 2013 Hadley CupThe 2013 Hadley Cup was held on Friday 7th June. Once again, Holland Haven were joined by the football and netball teams of Hamford Primary Academy, Frinton, Walton and Kirby Primary Schools. The sporting talent and teamwork skills on display were admirable and all of the children did a fantastic job of representing their school. After many thrilling and close-fought contests, Holland Haven won the Hadley Shield and the Hadley Cup! Congratulations to our Football and Netball players; we are very proud of you all! Holland Haven would like to thank the Staff and children of the participating schools for another enjoyable Hadley Cup. We would especially like to thank the Staff who refereed the matches. We look forward to welcoming you back again next year! |

A Very Special Thank You

Mr. George Senk.
We would also like to say a very special thank you to Mr Senk, whose voluntary hard work and dedication to our school is invaluable. In 2001, Mr Senk took over the running of the Hadley Cup from Ernie Hadley. For the last 12 years, Mr Senk has organised and hosted the event in addition to coaching the Holland Haven football team.
From all of the Staff and children, thank you very much Mr Senk. We couldn’t do it without you!
