OUR AUTUMN TERM Topic: Penguins!

This term we will be working as a penguin team!
The children will be learning and progressing through our Subject Keys which represent knowledge and skills.

Project 1: Life of Penguins
In Geography we will be looking at where the penguins live in the world, their habitats and therefore knowing about the geography of the continents and oceans. To use our skills to be a sportsman we will move like penguins, use basic movements, perform simple dances with the theme of penguins and also looking at the film Happy Feet to help inspire our movements. In outdoor P.E we will be playing penguin football using the tactics and rules of football but developing their own style with penguin players as a theme. In Art we will use some drawing, painting, sculpting and crafting techniques to make penguin collages with mixed media. Throughout the term we will be looking at the skills to become a good citizen by making a positive contribution within the classroom and school with the golden rules and core values whilst looking at the social interaction of penguins. In Computing the children will practise how to make algorithms and make their own penguin sprite to program, code and debug. The children will also look at how to stay safe on the internet using The adventures of Smartie the penguin and http://www.kidsmart.org.uk/teachers/ks1/readsmartie.aspx
In Music the children will learn a penguin song from Happy Feet the film where they will learn to sing and use their voices. We will also use the fill to help with our Literacy work and creative writing. The topic of penguins will link to our Science lessons where we will look at the habitats and seasons where the penguins live. Religious Education will follow the theme as closely as possible however the main focus will be on Hinduism and Special Stories.
Project 2: Conservation of Penguins topic letter will be added as we reach these projects.

Our tokens this term are named after Penguins

Welcome to the enchanted term of Wizardry! At the end of the Autumn term the children found mysterious magical invitations delivered to their lockers. Invitations to join a term at Holland Hogwarts school of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Each lesson will be a chance for the children to master their skills to help them graduate for the term at Holland Hogwarts. The children will be inspected by the Ministry of Magic and they will receive a graduation certificate by an Inspector.
Our Project based learning means that our lessons all link. Over the Spring Term we will cover 3 projects: Wizards and Witches, Hogwarts and Potions.
In Science we will be herbologist plant detectives which will help us to make potions. Through ICT we will be learning how to use the internet safely, using ICT as a research tool and how to use simple programmes to help us with our spells. Through looking at Quidditch World cup, the children will learn about the different countries and continents around the world whilst developing their P.E skills to help them learn the game of Quidditch itself and learning to dance at the Hogwarts ball. We will be learning the Harry Potter theme in our music lessons to accompany the final ball at the end of term. In History we will be looking at wizards and witches in stories over the years. We will be replicating stained glass windows as part of our Artwork to combine the lessons. In Design and Technology we will design, make and evaluate our own wizards hats, this will be combined with Forest Schools, where we will be making wands. In Religious Education and PSHE we will be exploring the responsibilities we have in looking after ourselves, special  objects and symbols. To celebrate icons of our nation we will be looking at JK Rowling and her achievements.
Literacy
In Literacy we will improve our information writing by studying the features of these texts whilst researching the world of magic. We will write traditional stories and compare the roles of different witches and wizards. We will have a problem later on in the term where the children will need to write instructions to help us catch this ‘problem’! We will then move on to explore poems using magic as our theme. During this term we will use the wizards as a theme to study and adapt our own stories.
Maths
In Maths we will cover Number, Measurement, Ratio and Proportion, Algebra, Geometry and Statistics, the children will have personalised activities that focus on their individual needs and targets. They will also develop their ability to use the skills they have learnt and apply them to problem solving and reasoning activities. The Maths ladders in this Home-School Book show the progression of Maths knowledge and skills.

Over the Summer Term we will cover 3 projects: Mini Beast Stories, Jobs for Mini Beasts and Mini Beast Hotels. In Science we will explore how to look after animals through the wonderful world of creatures and their habitats. We will discuss how to look after our local environment where these creatures can be found. Through ICT we will be learning how to use the internet safely and using ICT as a research tool as well as programming mini beast beebots. In Geography we will learn about the changing seasons whilst looking at the local landscape and the environments Mini Beasts would choose to live in. In History we will be looking at the importance of bee hives over the years. In Art, all of the pupils will be contributing to their own versions of Eric Carle art work with Mini Beasts as a theme. In Design and Technology we will design, make and evaluate our own Mini Beast enclosures. In Religious Education and PSHE we will be exploring the responsibilities we have in looking after our local environment and special places. By exploring how insects make their own ‘music’ we will look at different instruments.

English

In English we will improve our information writing by studying the features of these texts whilst researching the world of mini beasts. We will look at the writing styles of Julia Donaldson and Eric Carle and how they use mini beasts to tell stories. During this term we will use the mini beast theme to study and adapt our own stories.
